MERIT DEDICATED TO HIS HOLINESS: BHUTAN

June 3, 2009

Every 10th day of the Tibetan calendar of every month, prayers and other types of merit will be dedicated to His Holiness’s long life, as His Holiness was born on the 10th day of the 1st month. The Bhutanese volunteers have also decided to dedicate merit on every 15th day of each month as well.

The 4th of May 2009 corresponded with the Tibetan 10th day (tsey chutham), 3rd month which is considered to be Zhabdrung Kuchoe in Bhutan.

On 4th May 2009, the first Namgyalma or Namgyal Thong Choe prayers were performed by Bhutanese monks in Dodedrak monastery in Thimphu, Bhutan and were dedicated towards His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa’s long life and good health.

On the same day, the ADC Bhutanese volunteers visited Menchu Ney or Menchuphu in Paro.
Menchuphu gompa is holy site of Chenrezig (Avolokiteshvara) where Guru Padmasambhava meditated. The gompa was founded by Jamyang Palden Gyatsho (the great abbot of Tsang) in the 17th Century in accordance with the prophecy of Chenrezig (Avolokiteshvara).

The Bhutanese volunteers felt that this holy place was most appropriate for our first merit dedication as His Holiness is considered to be the reincarnation of Chenrezig and also Chenrezig being the most compassionate of all the Buddhas/Boddhisattvas, we hoped that our prayers would be answered swiftly.

On the way to the gompa, the volunteers visited the holy rockface that stands above the road, where the natural self arisen Chenrezig mantra OM AH HUNG can be seen.

Inside the gompa, the volunteers paid their respects to the self-arisen image of Chenrezig that is on the wall of a natural rock face. It is said that when fortunate people pray, amrita (nectar) falls from the rock canopy; but we were not so fortunate that day as no amrita fell when we were there.

Recitation of prayer group

The volunteers concluded the pilgrimage with a Tshok offering and recited His Holiness’s Long Life prayer 108 times, dedicating them for the benefit of His Holiness’s long life and good health.

It is said that ‘a drop of water on its own will easily evaporate, but in the ocean it will always remain;’ likewise we, the Bhutanese volunteers, hope that this small drop in the ocean of merit may always remain for His Holiness’s and the Drukpa Lineage’s benefit for eternity.
