Reflection on Shabten Practice In Mid Autumn Festival

Why Mid Autumn Festival?

Featuring the bright full moon in mid autumn, Mid Autumn Festival has been a traditional Chinese festival to celebrate family union and a romantic holiday for lovers to hang out under the moon. Come from a broken family, I used to feel extremely lonely on this day.

Inspired by His Holiness, now I realize that imprisoned by loneliness is actually cutting oneself off from the sufferings of the whole world. Therefore, this year, I flip to the other side of the coin – instead of being weak and crying for what “I” need; I choose being OK and appreciate what “I” can give.

So, dear brothers and sisters, I would love to offer you Shabten practice for His Holiness, the Drukpa Heroes and all Genuine Masters. What better gift can we offer when one Master’s life can light up infinite beings’ lives?

What Action has been taken?

Bird Market in Hong Kong, where worms and crickets are purchased to be fed alive to birdsWith limited money and conditions, I’ve released 8,000 crickets from the bird market in the morning of the captioned festival.  (For your information, Hong Kong people used to feed their birds with living crickets. Usually, these poor insects are not being consumed in one go. Their legs may be being pulled off first, then after one day, their internal organs ……)

Without a car, this humble trolley has transported the crickets uphill to the grassland and treesThe crickets are released to the countryside where they can enjoy fresh air and green grass, plus having plenty places to hide from the birds. During the dedication prayers, crickets released all over the place are singing cheerfully, together with the melodious leaves, gentle breeze, clear sky and sunshine, what a beauty!

8’000 crickets are released in the countryside. During the dedication prayers, flowers are smiling, crickets are singing (a blissful experience to share with you all).

Encouragement and Confidence

To be frank, being a woman, all alone in the countryside, dealing with 8,000 insects for the first time, I have screamed for more than a couple of times. But fear may be one of the best opportunities to practice Love, right?

Love is the best cure for all weakness – especially when Love is not taken as a medicine from outside, but generated as an immune system from inside.

Remember the story on how Tara manifest from the compassionate tears of Chenrezig, to encourage and support His liberating activities and altruistic commitment? For me, this is the classic model for love and self-encouragement.

With this strength of Love, for sure we can pierce through all kinds of obstacles, including those relative threats to our beloved Guru’s life.

Dear brothers and sisters, it is an honor to join you all here. With full confidence of our strength, let us take action to fulfill our deepest collective wish – Long Life of the Glorious Drukpa!

Dear Khamtrul Rinpoche and Thuksey Rinpoche, heartfelt thanks for your beauty, practice and guidance. It is because of You, that we can agglomerate our scattered effort for the benefit of all beings.

Love,

Saldon (Seldron),

Drukpa Sangha in Hong Kong
